Gardening Tools - An Ideal Present for a Gardener

Garden tool sets can be a great gift, or just an easy way to get started gardening on your own. There are a wide variety of garden tool sets to consider, so with that in mind here are some tool types that you might want to ensure are part of your garden tool collection.

Garden tool sets are a popular gift for the gardener in your life. They are also a quick and easy way to get started gardening on your own. Garden tools sets come in many sizes with many types of hand tools for the gardener.  Here are some things to look for when buying garden tools.

The number of tools can vary a bit. Some simple starter sets have the bare minimum of three tools, while the high end offering is often a set of more than twelve to fifteen different tools. The price of a tool set will vary based on factors like the number of tools, so have in mind a target price to help guide your selection.

Look at the handles of the tools.  This will give you a good idea of the overall quality of the set. Plastic handled tools are often the least expensive, but unfortunately they can also feature the poorest workmanship, with cheap, weak stamped tool bodies as an example.  A good wooden handle will last a long time and is a good choice. There are tools that have handles with an ergonomic foam, which are quite comfortable to use and can be a good choice if the tools will see a lot of use or for those with chronic pain in their joints.

The tools that come with a garden set vary, but there are a few included in almost all sets. A favorite is the garden trowel. These look like Lilliputian spade, and have a multitude of uses like digging the hole for a small transplant, adding the fertilizer to that hole, or simply harvesting smaller root crop like beets.  Check that this in not made from thin stamped steel, as it will easily bend and break if used under a decent amount of pressure.

A bulb planter looks like a narrow trowel, and is used in much the same way as a trowel, but is used to plant items that are smaller but still need a deep hole like flower bulbs.

A garden fork, sometimes known as a cultivator, has hooked tines on it and is used to work the surface of the soil. These are great for a small weeding job, or cultivating a small area to prep for small seeded crops like carrots.

Pruners are popular in garden tool sets. A bypass pruner is usually the type of pruner included in tool sets because the are a little less expensive and better suited for small jobs like cutting flowers.

A garden tool set will come with a variety of holders. Some are in a simple plastic holder, but the more popular include a more rugged leather holster, or for larger sets a carrying case. These cases will sometimes have molded inserts for the tools, and the best cases are made of wood.

Finally, a garden utility cart can be a good gift. These are a good choice for grandma or grandpa, who may have trouble with all the bending and lugging associated with gardening. One popular type of garden cart has a small seat as the top of the cart so you can sit and work without a lot of bending.
